In front of a record 28,000 crowd in Kingston, Jamaica, the Jamaican
national team defeated the Brazilian Carioca team 2-1, in a game organized by Logosport for Guiness Beer promotion.
Brazil, captained by World Cup star Careca, starred famous players such
as Bebeto, Goncalvez, Wagner, Fabio Augusto, and was coached by World Cup champion Carlos Alberto. Jamaica starred its captian Theodore Whitmore, Malcom Macdonald, and Donovan Ricketts.
A crowd of over 28,000 was present in "The office" to watch the historic
event promoted by Guiness. The game was lively and the Brazilian team
took the lead on a header by Goncalvez. Jamaica equalized and the game
was excellent until the referee misunderstood the nature of the game
and expelled 2 Brazilian players. With only 9 players, Brazil resisted until Theodore Whitmore scored the winning goal in the 85th minute.
The entire coaching staff of Brazil was ejected during the game and Logosport
CEO Eric Manasse got the enjoyable task of coaching the last 10 minutes
of the game.
"The referee influenced the game," said Carlos Alberto Torres, coach of
Carioca team, "Without him we would have won. We will be back for a
rematch next year."
